Gotta lotta phonecalls during tonight's broadcast from people surprised that I would play the Captain Ahab, but I do really get a kick outta the Captain recorded and especially live, where it is never less than a true spectacle and thoroughly ecstatic hands-in-the-air dance party. For my dollar, nobody flirts with clichéd mainstream pop maneuvres like this guy. For every quick-cut breakcore'd-out championship cheerleading squad happy HC helium hit, Mr. Snipes also writes an honestly crafty song. Whatever you might think of Girl Talk these days, Captain Ahab is a band that people can agree whether they have good taste OR bad taste in music and/or comedy.

(Did I just embed a Pitchfork TV video on my blog? Yes, I did. Give this next vid 3:30 and you'll see what the live experience is really like.)

(Really? Yes, actually!)

If you haven't copped the Different Thinking People LP featuring songs recorded by the Psyclones from 1980 to 1985, hit up Permanent Records for your copy of this killer retrospective release from the first punk/new-wave scene stalwarts of Humboldt County. It's the best possible introduction to the band for newcomers, and the rabbit hole goes deeper when you check out the output of their enduring experimental/electronic/industrial tape and record label, Ladd-Frith.

Don't miss this upcoming rager also!
